A View from the Bridge
As we enter the half term break it is a good time to reflect on the success of the first half term and to look ahead at our plans for the future. We will be holding a commemoration service for Terry Hyde and Aaron Sayer at 4.00pm on All Souls Day, November 2nd 2011. We will dedicate a bench in Terry’s memory and plant a Hazel Tree for Aaron. All are welcome to attend, we would be grateful if you let us know in advance.
As usual The Rev. Ian Byrne, The Royal British Legion and I will conduct a Remembrance Assembly to the whole school on Friday 11th of November.
Over the past two weeks we have had a surge of activity that involves sport, Food Technology and community support.
It was great to see our sixth form design students working hard on the designs for the logo for the Bungay Festival next summer, I have been really impressed by the ideas and qulaity of the outcome. Also thanks to Emily Kiddy and Phoebe Thomas-Weeks for representing the school at an event held at St Mary’s Church in Halesworth, they both read sections from the King James Bible at event that celebrated the 400th anniversary of the bible.
Equally fantastic was the school final of the Future Chef competition last Thursday. The finalists were:
- Charlotte Read who came first
- Bertie Blandy who came second
- Ellis Mathers and James Gander who came joint third.
Charlotte will go on to represent Bungay High School in the County Finals later in November, Bertie will represent the school in the Rotary Club Masterchef competition.
The judges Mark and Tom from the Castle Inn were overwhelmed by the standard, ‘it is beyond my wildest expectations’ said Mark. He proceeded to give the winners a special treat, a meal for all 4 of them at his restaurant.
Many thanks to Mrs Coles, Mrs Goring, Mrs Nainby and Mrs Richards for all their organisation and inspiration.

At a recent Table Tennis Tournament Russell Mackay, Adam Roberts, Felix Prutton and Tommy Meadows made up the U-16 Table Tennis team. They journeyed to Esat Point academy to compete in the Northern Area qulaifying round. The team got off to a flying start achieving 4 out of 4 victories against Sir John Leman. Esat Point matched our skills and composure and the honours were shared 2 each. Our last game was against Benjamin Britten who were unbeaten, a place in the final was at stake for Bungay.
Felix and Russell faced tough opposition and narrowly lost out meaning the pressure was on Adam and Tommy, they had to win. However, very strong opposition meant Tommy lost out but Adam won his singles, which ensured Bungay second place overall.
The Sixth form took on Thorpe St Andrew Sports College in the National Cup. A hard fought match found the boys down 2-0 with 7 minutes to go, quick goals from Calvin Vincent and Cormac Warne took the game to extra time and Penalties. Charlie Holmes, Rob Read, Toby Kerslake and Dan Block all scored to take it to sudden death, where Calvin Vincent scored and James Shaw saved, meaning Bungay won 5-4 and go through to the next round for the first time in 6 years. The next game is against Thurston Comminity College at home.
The 6th form netball team continued there winning streak at a tournament hosted by Stradbroke School. There were 4 teams entered. The Bungay team were determined to win this tournamnet from the outset and no other school really stepped up to the challenge. Mrs Nabarro says that we played confident, fast paced netball which resulted in our girls winning everty match by large margins. Well done ladies.
The year 10 netball team also took part in an U-15 tournamnet. This was our first fixture of the season and we had a new team line up, the result of more players coming to training this year. The team were nervous at the start resulting in some tentative game play. But once we got a few goals, thanks to newly appointed Goal Attack Amy Lockwood, our confidence grew and we started taking control of games. This resulted in the team winning 4 out of 5 games.
Special mention should go to Brodie Lock, player of the match, for her outstanding effort in attack. Brodie made some excellent penetrating runs to create openings for Bungay, as well as passing some amazing balls in to the circle which allowed our shooters to be in the best position to score the goals.
Congratulations to everyone who played, I hope this will be the start to a very positive season.
The U-16 Ladies football team played Long Stratton, this was their second game of the season and after a narrow defeat in the first they were keen to get back on winning ways.
The first half saw pretty much an even contest. Rosie Cook put Bungay ahead after 15 minutes, Long Stratton would have been back on even terms if not for the flexibility of Bungay goalkeeper Ella Taylor.
In the second half Captain Ellen Fewkes Woodrow took commnad of the midfield, switching play with both wings. This allowed time and space for Joscelyn Foster and Sarh Kett to drive towards the box sending balls fizzing across the Long Stratton goal. The pressure soon became too much for Long Stratton as they conceded an own goal thanks to pressure applied by Chelsea Caplin. Soon after Rosie Cook doubled her goal tally as she linked up with Sarah Kett on the right wing.
Not to be outdone Sarha Kett put herself on the score sheet moments later with a superb self made goal running half the pitch fending off players challenges to blast the ball into the back of the net.
Bungay were now in full flow with nothing getting past the water tight defence governed by Lucy watson and Emily Walsh. Long Stratton struggled to deal with the quality crosses and concede another own goal to make the score 5-0.
With 5 minutes to go Ellen Fewkes-Woodrow added to the score, making it 6-0. Congratulations ladies.
