Wednesday the 16th May saw a very exciting High Suffolk Schools Sports Rounders Tournament. The first game for year 10 this season, and Year 9 the first time they have played as a team, because of the very unsummerlike weather causing previous fixtures to be abandoned.

Year 10 soon got into the groove, displaying outstanding fielding skills to put all the other schools batters in every match before they had received all the balls for the innings. Some excellent batting from Ellen Fewkes -Woodrow found holes in the oppositions fielding positions and gained important rounders for Bungay. This excellent overall performance from the girls resulted in a convincing tournament win for the team. They are now hoping to repeat the performance in Junes’s tournament, which will qualify them for the county final.

Year 9 put in a sound performance, learning quickly as they played. Unfortunately they did not win a match, but they were not completely out of reach and agreed with more practice and confidence they could narrow the gap or even reverse the results. This is now their aim. Player of the match for year 9 was Courtney Cliff.

Success continued today Thursday 17th May, when 8 tennis players from year 9 and 10 travelled to St Felix to play in an U15 mixed doubles tournament. Well done to Adam Roberts and Niamh Smyth on winning the cup and to Cameron Robson and Lauren Howe on winning the plate. An excellent performance all round.

Many thanks to the Friends of Bungay High School who do fantastic work in raising additional funds towards our new mini bus. At the weekend they raised £160 on a cake sale at the Buttercross in Bungay and a further £100 on a raffle. They will be starting the 100 club again soon, a great way of supporting the school for just £12 per year, please let us know if you would like to join, first come first served!

A big well done to all those students who took part in the Maths challenge this year. Congratulations, in particular, go to Laura Wakelin, for achieving the award for best in school. Laura was also awarded a gold certificate, along with Matthew Skazick and Felix Prutton, who all went through to the next round of the competition.

Joining these results, Melina Dickson, Jeff Leong, Molly Reeve, Liam Saunders, Charlotte Matthews, Joscelyn Foster and Anna Berry, also did fantastically well, receiving silver certificates.

Congratulations also go to Chris Collier, Mark Tait, Lisa Woods, Jasper Lavender, Cameron Robson, Daniel Jones, Alex Rogers, Ben Bradshaw, Josh Cyprus, Juliette Parker-Jervis, Zoe Johnson, Katie Densham, Joe Hunt, James Verrall, Adam Roberts, Samantha Bonner, Morgan Hardy and Ben Small on receiving Bronze.

We have received some excellent Music results, Congratulations to:

Rhiannon Alger – Grade 5 Violin

Anna Berry – Grade 4 Piano with Distinction

Anna Berry – Grade 1 Guitar with Merit

Bethany Clouting – Grade 1 Guitar with Merit

Sophie Pepperell – Grade 1 Guitar with Merit

Terence Vu – Grade 2 Drum Kit with Merit

Laura Wakelin – Grade 6 Alto Sax with Distinction

Megan Wisdom – Grade 6 Alto Sax with Merit.

Three of our year 10 students represented Halesworth B Company Army cadets at the weekend in the County Athletics Championships held in Lincoln. Very well done to Ashley Hawkins, Jordan Rees and Holly Seabright, all three did very well in their specialist disciplines.

Congratulations to Hannah Barnes and Lauren Howe of Year 9, they completed in the Suffolk Schools Track and Field Championships on 10th May. Hannah came third in the 800m and is being considered for the regional finals, Lauren came fourth in the 1500m. A really good result for both girls.

Bungay U14 Cricket team beat Thomas Mills High School on 2nd May by 24 runs, it was in a pool match of the U14 Suffolk 20:20 Cricket tournament. Bungay batted first scoring 96 for 2; Joe McKay 27, Aaron Goffin 25 and Ben Small 20 scored the runs.

In Reply TMHS scored 72 for 2 with wickets taken by McKay and Small. It was a great start to the season for this promising team. Good luck against St Albans in Ipswich this week.

The Maths department have been given the opportunity of hosting once again the excellent roadshow – The BP Trading Challenge. This will be on Thursday 14 June, 90 students will be involved from across year 9.

On Monday of this week we hosted a Young Enterprise event for year 9, many thanks to Mrs Athanasoulli for her excellent organisation, we have received the following comments from Young Enterprise Manager, Patricia Hagan:

” Thanks for a great day at Bungay High yesterday. I really enjoyed it as I know my colleagues had a great time too. The students were lovely and were really engaged throughout the day. I hope they gained from the experience”.

We are making great progress with the new house system, all students have been given a new house from September and are being offered posts as ambassadors this week.

We also look forward to welcoming parents of year 5 students to a special event on June 27th, which is a get to know your high school event, we haven’t done this before, the team is really looking forward to it.

Just before we finished for Easter the Boys Football and Hockey teams were in action before the posts came down for the summer.

On Thursday 29th March the U14 and U15 football teams completed their season with an away fixture to Archbishop Sancroft High School. The U14′s managed to win 4-2 with goals from Matt Vettesse, Aaron Goffin and 2 goals from Sam Hills. The U15′s had an emphatic win beating ABSH 8-0. Hat tricks from Will King and Keelan Shand and a goal a piece for Lewis Wright and Lee Mortier.

The U16 Hockey team played an excellent match away against Langley School, coming from behind twice to win 3-2. Sonny Molloy captained the side superbly, and managed to score one of the goals with Keelan Shand scoring twice. There were fine performances from Gavin Kiernan in goal and Mitch Young in Defence.

We are very heavily into the GCSE and A level exam season. Since our return from Easter the PE, Art and Drama students have all had their practical assessments with external assessors, feedback from staff is very positive. The written exams commence in the next two weeks. I am very grateful to the staff and students who gave up part of their Easter break to attend revision sessions. This really does show the commitment of all involved.

I am delighted that we have been able to secure 10 places for year 10 Gifted and Talented students to attend Oxford University on the 8th May, I know they will be inspired by the experience.

I am equally delighted to have been asked to present the best student of the year awards at the North Suffolk skills centre last week, congratulations to Emily Sutton on being awarded best student in Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy and Mikey Chang and Cory Godbold, best students in Motor Vehicle Maintenance. We are currently working very closely with our partners to ensure the long term sustainability of the centre, working very closely with the Halesworth Campus Group who will take over the Halesworth Middle School site in September 2012.

Many thanks to the Art teachers of the local schools for organising the Art Exhibition of students work at Halesworth on show from this weekend, you should go along to see it, there are some stunning exhibits.

High Tide festival starts next week at Halesworth, a number of our students are involved, it was great to welcome Cad Taylor in school last week to help promote the festival. Programmes are available from the school should you want one.

Congratulations to the Design students who won the prestigious packaging competition last week, they go to Grantham shortly to receive their awards, particularly well done to Charlie Wyatt of year 10 for his overall winning exhibit, he wins £100. Charlotte Sayer was highly commended.

Last weekend saw Miss Dix and her Duke of Edinburgh’s Award team camp overnight at the school as part of the induction of over 60 year 9 students into the expedition part of the scheme, apparently they did well with the exception of the 5.15 early awakening on Sunday morning!!

This weekend Miss Dix has taken the Gold Award students to the Peak District in order that the Nicaragua team can work together before they set off for South America in July. I hope the weather wasn’t a complete wash out.

The A level Geography students have just returned from their field course in Surrey, thanks to Mr Webster and Miss Myers for taking them. I hope to add more information and photos this week.

I will also being adding to the blog an article written by Will Podd of year 13 who has just returned from a very emotional visit to Auschwitz in Poland, he was accompanying our MP Peter Aldous and a group of sixth formers from the Waveney area. Thank you to Peter Aldous for his support to this project.

I will also add information from 654 Squadron who are serving in Afghanistan at present, they were the squadron we presented with special parcels to hopefully make life a little more comfortable in the theatre of war. The letters back to us are truly moving.

Congratulations to Miss Myers and the students of 9U for raising £330 from a bake sale yesterday lunchtime, all the proceeds are going to the Cystic Fibrosis charity.

Well done to the year 11 Drama students who did their mock exam pieces in front of an invited audience and examiner last night, the performances included Living with Lady Macbeth, Metamorphosis, Why don’t they care, Shakers and Bouncers. Thanks to Miss Doughty and Ms Zarins for the work you have put into this, thanks also to Mitch Young who stepped in at the last minute to help a couple of groups out.

This morning the year 11 students have been inspired by The Positively Mad organisation who have provided some great ideas for revision in readiness for prep time over the Easter holiday.

There was a great atmosphere in school yesterday morning as 96 Primary school pupils, teachers and parent helpers were engaged in a Science fair. They had worked so hard in teams to plan and present their findings on Wind Turbines and Solar energy, it was a real pleasure to be one of the judges. Many thanks to Mr Cramp, Mr Consiine, Mrs Linehan and Mr Attenburrow for organiising the event. The overall winner

On Wednesday 21st march, 8 students from year 12 went to the Cambridge Union Society to take part in the European Youth Parliament debate. Bungay High were arguing for increased economic aid to be sent to sub-Saharan Africa, and were the first successful resolution of the day, partly in thanks to Alex Green’s opening speech and Tom Raven’s closing lines. Ten competition was fierce as each school tried to get the chairman’s attention and show how keen they were to win. In the final debate which was spoken entirely in French, Billie Pearson and Ben Lock managed impressively well. Everyone got the chance to debate in the famous union hall, which has seen the likes of Winston Churchill and Jawaharilal Nehru speak in the past. All involved said it was a great experience and a competition we will have to enter again next year.

Many thanks to Mr Hardy, Mr Cook and Mrs Hubbard for giving our students this opportunity.

Congratulations to our year 10 Rugby squad who beat Hartismere high on 26th March, by 35-10. Mr Horne tells me that they played on a football pitch with protectors around the posts due to rock hard ground on the rugby pitch. Both sides produced a free flowing running game with magnificent handling skills on display. Sonny Molloy produced man of the match performance with Lewis Bunn pushing him hard for the title.

Many thanks to the whole school for your support for the Sport Relief Mile last Friday. It was a fantastic event which raised £1050 for a great cause. Today we have the Bake sale at lunch time in order that we raise additional funds to support a young person with Cystic Fibrosis. On Friday we have our non uniform day to support the local Rotary club in raising funds for the Big C appeal.

Congratulations to Mr Hardy on being awarded his MA (Master of the Arts) with Distinction this week, Mr Hardy clearly exemplifies that we never stop learning.

We have heard good news this week that we have been selected to provide the Guard of Honour at the Olympic Games for the National team of Rwanda. We have a link with a school in Rwanda, this honour adds another strong link to the athletes when they are so far from home. Mr Gillett will accompany 8 year 9 students to the event on the 27th July, the upper age limit was 14 so unfortunately non of our older students could take part.

It has been a tremendous week on the sport front for the school. On Wednesday we won both the U15 and U16 Rugby tournaments held at Woodbridge Rugby Club. The U15 team demonstrated the well balanced and dedicated approach we have grown to admire, well done to Owen Davies who made his first appearance for the squad.

The U16 also won their tournament finishing with a nail biting match against Thomas Mills High School which the lads clung on to win 7-5. Well done to Sam Chater of year 10 who stepped up to help due to injuries and to Alex Wakely for scoring the winning try. Look out for the team photos in the Beccles and Bungay Journal this week.

The First XV competed in a ten a side tournament at Thomas Mills on Thursday finishing second to Hartismere. The committed effort in the Bungay Close play needs to develop into a more fluent wide game for a win to be possible in the forthcoming fixture against Hartismere in 2 weeks time.

The Northern area U15 Netball tournament took place on Tuesday 13th March at BHS. Bungay were confident going into the competition, knowing that if they played well they had the potential to take first place. The first game was against BBHS, a well organised team. BHS played steadily against them to secure a 7-1 victory. A Further 12-3 win over the Denes and 9-2 win over East Point Academy left BHS one more victory to win the tournament. The last game was against St Felix School, with outstanding defence by Ellen Fewkes -Woodrow, Jasmine Hood and Juliette Parker -Jervis allowed us to break their team down and go on to win 8-2 making them convincing champions only conceding 8 goals all tournament.

In the U16 tournament we played host to the HSSSP tournament on Thursday 15th March. Despite playing some of the best Netball they narrowly lost by 1 goal. They went on to secure third place. Well done to everyone who played, the team has improved tremendously since their first venture in year 9 and Miss Mullenger says she has enjoyed being with them and watching them improve as Netball players.

The U14 and U16 football teams competed in a a six a side football tournament hosted by Stradbroke High on Thursday 15 th March. The U16 team captained by Lewis Chenery were unstoppable, beating every team convincingly to win the tournament overall. The team consisted of Lewis Chenery, Jordan Thrower, Joshua Randall, Ben Tipple, Kieran Cliff, Rhys Spencer and Kyle Doughty.

The U14s also had success winning their tournament by the finest of margins. They won the first game 1-0, drew the next two games 0-0 and won the last game 6-0. They won on goals scored. This is the teams second tournament win of the year. The team consisted of Jake Prettyman, Yamana Partridge, Keiran Caddle, Aaron Goffin(Capt), Sam Hills, Tommie Williams and Tyler Gallant.

Many thanks to the PE staff who give up lunchtimes and after school to ensure our students get the full range of sporting opportunities.

I am pleased to be able to say we have 10 students selected to attend a taster session at Oxford University on the 8th May, I know they will have a great time. Well done to: Laura Wakelin, Nathaniel Hindes, Matthew Skazick, Eve Woods, Molly Reeve, Liam Saunders, Mark Tait, Poppy Marriott, Katie Lambert and Megan Hart.

Congratulations to the year 10 students who attended a Law day at SJLHS on Monday, they all had a great day and were highly applauded by the Judge and Barristers on the day, special congratulations to Eleanor Easton who was on the winning team. Thank you to Mrs Capps-Jenner for giving them this opportunity.

We are now entering the Duke of Edinburgh’s Expedition Season, congratulations to the following for achieving their Bronze and Silver Awards: Amy Lockwood, Keelan Shand, Katie Malone, Megan Hart, Brodie Lock, Alice Baggott, Thomas Allenby, Chip Skingley, Juliette Parker-Jervis, Alice Milne, Hannah Bradshaw, Zoe Johnson, Nicholas Ball, Courtney Elmy, Eleanor Easton, Nina Bircham, Bethany Rogers, Laura Wakelin, Sarah Kett, Hannah Taylor, Jasmine Hood, Sophie Nobbs, Iona Champain, Bertie Blandy, Sam Chater, Ashley Warnes, George Allen, Matthew Skazick, George Catchpole and Joshua Cyprus. Silver Awards to Jonathan Ball and Wilfred Berry.

We look forward to welcoming you to our Spring Concert on Wednesday 21st March at 7.00pm, Mrs Drew -Batty has put together a great programme for us all to enjoy the musical talents of our wonderful students and staff. Please come along and support us.

Many thanks to Mr Mannion for organising Science week, the posters about Alexander Fleming and Penicillin are wonderful as were the assemblies to each year group performed by the Sixth Form Drama students and written by Miss Doughty.

Many thanks to Mr Gillett, Mrs Nabarro and their team, they are organising the Sport Relief Mile on Friday. The whole school students and staff will take part at just after 3.00pm in order that we can do the mile and finish in time for the buses. We hope to raise over £1000 for this very worthwhile cause. If you would like to contribute then please get in touch with the school office.

Congratulations to Robert Thompson-Darch on being offered a place at the Ministry of Defence Sixth Form Establishment at Welbeck College. Robert intends to succeed there before joining the Army.

We have received news of the pupil numbers for September 2012 from the local authority. We are pleased that so many parents have trusted us to educate their children both in the classroom and with the huge array of extra curricular activities on offer. We have just been sent information on the latest OFSTED figures which showed that 87 schools have been inspected under the new regulations since January, the same ones we were inspected under. For Overall Effectiveness we were given Outstanding, so far of the 87 schools only 3.4% have been awarded Outstanding, I believe this confirms the really good work we do here at Bungay High.

With over 600 new faces joining us at the same time this summer, we are starting them at the high School the week beginning 9th July, so that they have their settling in period before the summer holiday that way when they start back in September we are able to ‘hit the ground running’.

Congratulations to the Schools TaeKwondo club on their recent national championship successes, I am told by Mr Gillett that this weekend saw another medal haul by the students.

Congratulations to the year 9 Girls 6 a side football team, they won their first tournament of the season held at Denes High School in Lowestoft. Also congratulations to the year 11 Rugby squad who beat SJLHS 39-5, a great team performance well done to Man of the Match, Gavin Kiernan who was playing his first game at scrum half.

News just in from former student Becky Nainby. Becky is in Bangladesh working for a charity helping educate and support underprivileged children. She is finding the experience demanding but hugely rewarding. Last week she found herself appearing on the front page of the national newspaper, they were reporting on the success of the charity’s work.

A sincere thank you to year 10 groups under the guidance of Mrs Capps-Jenner. They collected over 30 shoe boxes full of useful items for the Troops in Afghanistan campaign. Mrs Burgess, whose husband is serving in Afghanistan and has a son in our year 9 was very grateful, she has organised this opportunity in our area. Mr Gillett is now planning our contribution to the Sport Relief Mile Run taking place on the afternoon of the 23rd March, we hope that large numbers of students will take part for this very worthy cause.

We marked World Book day on the 1st March, with a big Murder Mystery event in the Library. It was another excellent Mrs Marriott planned event, which saw lots of students taking part by using the library index system to work out who the victim and murderer were.

Thank you to Miss Dix, Mrs McKenzie and the Duke of Edinburgh’s award Silver Group for giving up their weekend to work together on their route plans for the summer expedition to the Lake District.

Thank you to Mr Cook, Mr Hardy and Mrs Capps-Jenner for taking the Sixth form History students to Berlin in the half term holiday, they had an amazing, if freezing cold experience. The trip was to support the course they are studying, they believe it was hugely rewarding.

I am delighted to say that the planned ICT infrastructure work undertaken at the new sixth form centre went really well over half term, as did the changes to the main school site. We will be working with Dominic Harris to produce a virtual tour showing how the sixth form centre will look over the next couple of weeks, ready for our Year 11 parents evening in March.

Many congratulations to Robert Thompson – Darch on being selected for interview at the Army Officer Sixth Form Training Centre at Welbeck, the very best of luck to Robert at the selection board meeting.

We await the news of the names of the students who will be joining us in September, as I am sure parents do. The numbers so far look very positive, there are 196 in year 7, 210 in year 8 and 192 in year 9.

We have had some exciting news of the success of one of our former students and interns Craig Frost. At University Craig made a film called ‘Have a Nice Day’ and has just been informed that the film has made the official selection for the Soho International Film Festival 2012 in New York in April. Great news indeed.

Congratulations to the following students on recent sporting successes:

Sophie Morgan and Ruth Denham for their recent gold medal winning performances during the Eastern area Judo Championships

Lauren Howe and Hannah Barnes for their success in the recent English Schools National Cross Country Finals.

Congratulations to the Sixth Form Football team on their recent 5-4 win over Lowestoft Sixth Form Centre in an exciting game held at Barnard’s Meadow in Lowestoft. Well done to Man of the match, Daniel Block.

Congratulations to the U-16 Badminton team on reaching the regional finals at the Ipswich Academy on March 16th. Bungay played exceptionally well throughout the County Championships only dropping 2 games out of 20, a fantastic achievement. Well done to George Caplin, Ollie Hills, Chris Green and Keelan Shand, best of luck in the regionals.

We are pleased( never complacent!) with the current position of the school in the national league table picture, it is always rewarding when the students achieve a value added score that puts them in the top 12 of all schools in Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire. This is a measure of progress from Key stage 2 at 11 years of age to Key stage 4 at 16 years of age, well done to the students and staff. Our sixth form students did very well indeed and sets a firm foundation for our move to our exciting sixth form centre in September 2012, where alongsisde a strong academic and vocational offer we will have an exciting array of extra curricular activites from sports, debating society, kayaking in Scotland, Drama productions to name but a few.

It is with great sadness that I report the sudden death of former colleague Dr Ronald McLeod. He died of a stroke at the young age of 47 and has left behind his wife Cathy and two young sons, Sam and Daniel. Our thoughts are with them at this terrible time.

Recent sporting successes have included:

Suffolk U-14 Badminton Championships, On Friday 13th January a team consisting of Aaron Goffin, Adam Roberts, Harry Delaney and Jake Turner represented us at the Ipswich Academy. The team played some outstanding badminton, special mention to Adam Roberts who won all his singles games. In the pool stages Bungay beat King Edwards 5-0, followed by a5-0 win over Beccles Middle and lost 3-2 to the eventual winners Copleston High. As Mr Middleton says, the boys were a credit to the school.

On Thursday 19th January 2012, Ben Clements and Aaron Rogerson won the Junior Pairs Competition at the World Bowls Indoor Championships. This is Ben’s second year of winning the competition and did exceptionally well playing with a broken left arm! He had to adjust his whole bowling technique to compensate and in the tie-break, bowled the ball to seal victory. Congratulations to them both.

Also on the same day, four Bungay High School students took part in the Suffolk Cross Country Finals held at the Royal Hospital School in Ipswich. The weather was cold and very windy but dry to start. In the junior girls event, Lauren Howe and Hannah Barnes improved on their qualifying positions to come in 7th and 9th respectively. They have both qualified for the Anglian Region round of the competition.

In the junior boys event, Sam Hills ran a very good race coming in 31st. The heavens opened just before Bethany Casbolt set out for the Intermediate Girls race and she came in a very well placed 21st position in awful running conditions.

A very big well done to all four for taking part in a very arduous race, and thanks to Mrs Capps-Jenner and Mrs Linehan for taking and supporting you.

On Tuesday 24th January the U14 football team played a in a 7 a side tournament hosted by Lynn Grove High School in Gorleston. The team consisted of Aaron Goffin,Jake Prettyman, George Edwards, Tommie Williams, Kieran Cadle, Sam Hills, Matt Vettesse and Tyler Gallant. After a slow start the team picked up momentum and reached the semi finals. In the semi finals a close match saw us beat Benjamin Britten High School 1-0 with an Aaron Goffin goal. In the final they met the hosts Lynn Grove and put in an excellent performance winning 2-0 with two well taken Matt Vettesse goals. The team showed a great attitude and work ethic throughout the tournament and fully deserved the title of Champions.

Success on the music front with the following students passing a music exam in the Autumn term:

Denys Woolley – Grade 1 Piano with Merit

Wilf Berry – Grade 1 Bass Guitar with Merit

Xavier Heath – Grade 2 Euphonium

Kyle Clouting – Grade 3 Electric Guitar with Distinction

April Bowen – Grade 3 Drum Kit

Nicholas Ball – Grade 4 Cornet with Merit.

Congratulations to them all and to Mrs Drew-Batty and her team of perepatetic music teachers who provide such wonderful musical experiences for our students.

Happy New Year to all students, staff, governors and parents.

The Autumn term finished with a flourish, many thanks and congratulations to the prefect team for organising one the the best Pop Mimes on record, thoroughly enjoyed by all.

Also congratulations to the contestants who entered the book mastermind competition. Mrs Marriott tells me that we had 25 contestants enter into the fun and competitive spirit of Book Mastermind this year. Three heats were held over the past month which gave rise to the 6 finalists. Each of the students had to answer 20 questions on a fiction book of their choice in a time frame of 2 minutes putting themselves under the spotlight on the Deputy Head’s black chair! A place in the final means a different choice of book and the pressure all over again! A remarkable achievement then for Liam Saunders to score 18 correct answers with no passes in a time of 1 minute 53 seconds, Liam’s winning choice of book was The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. In second place for the second year running was Mattea Ball who also gave an outstanding performance answering 17 correctly again with no passes in a time of 1 minute and 28 seconds.

Well done to all involved.

My thanks to Mrs Charlish for organising our Presentation evening just before Christmas and to Lorna Charlish for being our guest speaker, it is always great to see our alumni doing so well in the competitive business world. It was tremendous to see our students returning from University with tales of how things are progressing. They really are an inspiration to our younger students.

We at Bungay High would like to pass on our condolences to Mr David Brook husband of Angela Brook, the Mayor of Bungay who lost her very brave fight against cancer just before Christmas, Angela was a great supporter of the school as well as one of our exam invigilators, she will be sorely missed.

We now move into a very busy spring term , with a raft of exams for all year groups upon us, I believe our students have the commitment and motivation to succeed again this year. We also wish our year 12 Drama students all the best for their performances on Thursday evening of this week.

Our partnership planning for the new school in September is going well, we have appointed 12 middle school staff so far to our team with more to follow once we have our confirmed pupil numbers in February. Mrs MacKenzie is doing a fantastic job training staff, students and governors in the new ways of the house and vertical tutoring system, parents are being kept informed of the process and possible outcomes.

As we enter the last week of the term we have a lot of very positive experiences to look back on and many great things to look forward to in the new year.

Last week we held our Winter Concert which was teamed with the Craft Fair to raise funds for our partner school in Rwanda, I would like to congratulate Mrs Drew Batty and her musicians for a wonderful evening of Music, you can forget X – Factor we certainly have the B- factor here at Bungay High. I look forward to hearing some of the pieces played again at the Presentation Evening on Monday 12th December, which celebrates all the student success of the past year and also celebrates the 5oth anniversary of the school on its current site. There has been a school in Bungay for 446 years, we are maintaining the fine traditions first established in the St Marys’s church porch all those years ago. We welcome Lorna Charlish as our Guest of Honour, Lorna has had a successful career since leaving school and university, she is now the Head of Marketing at Emap Connect, one of the leading Media Houses in Europe.

Tremendous news for one of our year 9 students. Sam Hills, has been selected to be an Olympic Torch Bearer when the torch reaches Lowestoft on 4th July 2012. Extremely well done Sam, we are very proud that you have achieved this accolade.

Congratulations go to Ashley Block in Year 10 on achieving his Gold Chief Scout Award, the highest honour in the Scouting movement. He completed it with flying colours, demonstrating a high level of commitment, and producing an outstanding computer based presentation of his achievements in Scouts.

Congratulations to Mrs Ballard our Art Teacher who gave birth to a son on 25th November, we welcome Huckleberry Chance Ballard into the Bungay Family.

Many thanks to Mrs Crowley for organising the Cambridge University lectures on Monday for 30 of our students, I know they will enjoy the experince and be ispired to go for Gold.

It was a privilege to attend the Bungay Town Dinner last Friday evening. I was asked to propose the toast to the Town, which I did by giving a talk about the past 446 years of the school and the exciting plans for the future. I would like to thank the Town Reeve, Roger Allen and his Wife Sue for making my wife and I so welcome. We have this week been very busy interviewing new staff for the school in September 2012. We have made 9 appointments of Halesworth and Bungay Middle School staff. I also congratulate Mr C Gillett on becoming the new Assistant Headteacher (Teaching and Learning), Mr M Considine the new Head of House and Mrs S. Armour – Chelou on becoming the new Assistant SENCO.

Sporting events have continued , many thanks to Miss Mullenger for the following match report from the U16 Girls football match against the Denes this week.

Having previously lost in a closely contested cup match vs Denes High school, the team were out for revenge. Bungay got off to flying start with Rosie Cook chasing a 50/50 ball, she managed to squeeze the ball into the bottom corner whilst being tackled to the floor by the Denes goalkeeper. Rosie went onto score 3 more goals it her best performance to date and finished top scorer.

Denes were never out of contention with their star player continuously keeping them within one goal of Bungay. It was evident that Bungay were the more cohesive and united side linking up with one another and moving to support each other, showing true desire and teamwork to ensure they came out on top of what was becoming a nail biting match.

Bungay kept on piling on the pressure with Sarah Kett chasing up the pitch to force a well timed header into the back of the net before then pouncing on a loose ball to bring her goal tally in the match to two.

Never to be left off the score sheet captain Ellie Fewkes-Woodrow, she curled a sweetly struck shot into the top corner. Brooke Osborne, having hit practically every part of the goal finally hit the back of the net when she rifled the winning goal. The final score was 8-6 to Bungay High.

Great support was also provided by; Emily Walsh, Megan Vincent, Ella Taylor, Lucy Watson, Lauren Broadley and Jess Harvey who all played their part in what was a fantastic display of grit, determination and teamwork. Well done girls.
