I am delighted to say that the planned ICT infrastructure work undertaken at the new sixth form centre went really well over half term, as did the changes to the main school site. We will be working with Dominic Harris to produce a virtual tour showing how the sixth form centre will look over the next couple of weeks, ready for our Year 11 parents evening in March.

Many congratulations to Robert Thompson – Darch on being selected for interview at the Army Officer Sixth Form Training Centre at Welbeck, the very best of luck to Robert at the selection board meeting.

We await the news of the names of the students who will be joining us in September, as I am sure parents do. The numbers so far look very positive, there are 196 in year 7, 210 in year 8 and 192 in year 9.

We have had some exciting news of the success of one of our former students and interns Craig Frost. At University Craig made a film called ‘Have a Nice Day’ and has just been informed that the film has made the official selection for the Soho International Film Festival 2012 in New York in April. Great news indeed.

Congratulations to the following students on recent sporting successes:

Sophie Morgan and Ruth Denham for their recent gold medal winning performances during the Eastern area Judo Championships

Lauren Howe and Hannah Barnes for their success in the recent English Schools National Cross Country Finals.

Congratulations to the Sixth Form Football team on their recent 5-4 win over Lowestoft Sixth Form Centre in an exciting game held at Barnard’s Meadow in Lowestoft. Well done to Man of the match, Daniel Block.

Congratulations to the U-16 Badminton team on reaching the regional finals at the Ipswich Academy on March 16th. Bungay played exceptionally well throughout the County Championships only dropping 2 games out of 20, a fantastic achievement. Well done to George Caplin, Ollie Hills, Chris Green and Keelan Shand, best of luck in the regionals.

We are pleased( never complacent!) with the current position of the school in the national league table picture, it is always rewarding when the students achieve a value added score that puts them in the top 12 of all schools in Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire. This is a measure of progress from Key stage 2 at 11 years of age to Key stage 4 at 16 years of age, well done to the students and staff. Our sixth form students did very well indeed and sets a firm foundation for our move to our exciting sixth form centre in September 2012, where alongsisde a strong academic and vocational offer we will have an exciting array of extra curricular activites from sports, debating society, kayaking in Scotland, Drama productions to name but a few.

It is with great sadness that I report the sudden death of former colleague Dr Ronald McLeod. He died of a stroke at the young age of 47 and has left behind his wife Cathy and two young sons, Sam and Daniel. Our thoughts are with them at this terrible time.

Recent sporting successes have included:

Suffolk U-14 Badminton Championships, On Friday 13th January a team consisting of Aaron Goffin, Adam Roberts, Harry Delaney and Jake Turner represented us at the Ipswich Academy. The team played some outstanding badminton, special mention to Adam Roberts who won all his singles games. In the pool stages Bungay beat King Edwards 5-0, followed by a5-0 win over Beccles Middle and lost 3-2 to the eventual winners Copleston High. As Mr Middleton says, the boys were a credit to the school.

On Thursday 19th January 2012, Ben Clements and Aaron Rogerson won the Junior Pairs Competition at the World Bowls Indoor Championships. This is Ben’s second year of winning the competition and did exceptionally well playing with a broken left arm! He had to adjust his whole bowling technique to compensate and in the tie-break, bowled the ball to seal victory. Congratulations to them both.

Also on the same day, four Bungay High School students took part in the Suffolk Cross Country Finals held at the Royal Hospital School in Ipswich. The weather was cold and very windy but dry to start. In the junior girls event, Lauren Howe and Hannah Barnes improved on their qualifying positions to come in 7th and 9th respectively. They have both qualified for the Anglian Region round of the competition.

In the junior boys event, Sam Hills ran a very good race coming in 31st. The heavens opened just before Bethany Casbolt set out for the Intermediate Girls race and she came in a very well placed 21st position in awful running conditions.

A very big well done to all four for taking part in a very arduous race, and thanks to Mrs Capps-Jenner and Mrs Linehan for taking and supporting you.

On Tuesday 24th January the U14 football team played a in a 7 a side tournament hosted by Lynn Grove High School in Gorleston. The team consisted of Aaron Goffin,Jake Prettyman, George Edwards, Tommie Williams, Kieran Cadle, Sam Hills, Matt Vettesse and Tyler Gallant. After a slow start the team picked up momentum and reached the semi finals. In the semi finals a close match saw us beat Benjamin Britten High School 1-0 with an Aaron Goffin goal. In the final they met the hosts Lynn Grove and put in an excellent performance winning 2-0 with two well taken Matt Vettesse goals. The team showed a great attitude and work ethic throughout the tournament and fully deserved the title of Champions.

Success on the music front with the following students passing a music exam in the Autumn term:

Denys Woolley – Grade 1 Piano with Merit

Wilf Berry – Grade 1 Bass Guitar with Merit

Xavier Heath – Grade 2 Euphonium

Kyle Clouting – Grade 3 Electric Guitar with Distinction

Ashley Hawkins – Grade 3 Trumpet with Merit

Jeff Leong – Grade 3 Electric Guitar with Distinction

Jonathan Ball – Grade 3 Drum Kit with Merit

April Bowen – Grade 3 Drum Kit

Nicholas Ball – Grade 4 Cornet with Merit.

Congratulations to them all and to Mrs Drew-Batty and her team of perepatetic music teachers who provide such wonderful musical experiences for our students.

Happy New Year to all students, staff, governors and parents.

The Autumn term finished with a flourish, many thanks and congratulations to the prefect team for organising one the the best Pop Mimes on record, thoroughly enjoyed by all.

Also congratulations to the contestants who entered the book mastermind competition. Mrs Marriott tells me that we had 25 contestants enter into the fun and competitive spirit of Book Mastermind this year. Three heats were held over the past month which gave rise to the 6 finalists. Each of the students had to answer 20 questions on a fiction book of their choice in a time frame of 2 minutes putting themselves under the spotlight on the Deputy Head’s black chair! A place in the final means a different choice of book and the pressure all over again! A remarkable achievement then for Liam Saunders to score 18 correct answers with no passes in a time of 1 minute 53 seconds, Liam’s winning choice of book was The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. In second place for the second year running was Mattea Ball who also gave an outstanding performance answering 17 correctly again with no passes in a time of 1 minute and 28 seconds.

Well done to all involved.

My thanks to Mrs Charlish for organising our Presentation evening just before Christmas and to Lorna Charlish for being our guest speaker, it is always great to see our alumni doing so well in the competitive business world. It was tremendous to see our students returning from University with tales of how things are progressing. They really are an inspiration to our younger students.

We at Bungay High would like to pass on our condolences to Mr David Brook husband of Angela Brook, the Mayor of Bungay who lost her very brave fight against cancer just before Christmas, Angela was a great supporter of the school as well as one of our exam invigilators, she will be sorely missed.

We now move into a very busy spring term , with a raft of exams for all year groups upon us, I believe our students have the commitment and motivation to succeed again this year. We also wish our year 12 Drama students all the best for their performances on Thursday evening of this week.

Our partnership planning for the new school in September is going well, we have appointed 12 middle school staff so far to our team with more to follow once we have our confirmed pupil numbers in February. Mrs MacKenzie is doing a fantastic job training staff, students and governors in the new ways of the house and vertical tutoring system, parents are being kept informed of the process and possible outcomes.

As we enter the last week of the term we have a lot of very positive experiences to look back on and many great things to look forward to in the new year.

Last week we held our Winter Concert which was teamed with the Craft Fair to raise funds for our partner school in Rwanda, I would like to congratulate Mrs Drew Batty and her musicians for a wonderful evening of Music, you can forget X – Factor we certainly have the B- factor here at Bungay High. I look forward to hearing some of the pieces played again at the Presentation Evening on Monday 12th December, which celebrates all the student success of the past year and also celebrates the 5oth anniversary of the school on its current site. There has been a school in Bungay for 446 years, we are maintaining the fine traditions first established in the St Marys’s church porch all those years ago. We welcome Lorna Charlish as our Guest of Honour, Lorna has had a successful career since leaving school and university, she is now the Head of Marketing at Emap Connect, one of the leading Media Houses in Europe.

Tremendous news for one of our year 9 students. Sam Hills, has been selected to be an Olympic Torch Bearer when the torch reaches Lowestoft on 4th July 2012. Extremely well done Sam, we are very proud that you have achieved this accolade.

Congratulations go to Ashley Block in Year 10 on achieving his Gold Chief Scout Award, the highest honour in the Scouting movement. He completed it with flying colours, demonstrating a high level of commitment, and producing an outstanding computer based presentation of his achievements in Scouts.

Congratulations to Mrs Ballard our Art Teacher who gave birth to a son on 25th November, we welcome Huckleberry Chance Ballard into the Bungay Family.

Many thanks to Mrs Crowley for organising the Cambridge University lectures on Monday for 30 of our students, I know they will enjoy the experince and be ispired to go for Gold.

It was a privilege to attend the Bungay Town Dinner last Friday evening. I was asked to propose the toast to the Town, which I did by giving a talk about the past 446 years of the school and the exciting plans for the future. I would like to thank the Town Reeve, Roger Allen and his Wife Sue for making my wife and I so welcome. We have this week been very busy interviewing new staff for the school in September 2012. We have made 9 appointments of Halesworth and Bungay Middle School staff. I also congratulate Mr C Gillett on becoming the new Assistant Headteacher (Teaching and Learning), Mr M Considine the new Head of House and Mrs S. Armour – Chelou on becoming the new Assistant SENCO.

Sporting events have continued , many thanks to Miss Mullenger for the following match report from the U16 Girls football match against the Denes this week.

Having previously lost in a closely contested cup match vs Denes High school, the team were out for revenge. Bungay got off to flying start with Rosie Cook chasing a 50/50 ball, she managed to squeeze the ball into the bottom corner whilst being tackled to the floor by the Denes goalkeeper. Rosie went onto score 3 more goals it her best performance to date and finished top scorer.

Denes were never out of contention with their star player continuously keeping them within one goal of Bungay. It was evident that Bungay were the more cohesive and united side linking up with one another and moving to support each other, showing true desire and teamwork to ensure they came out on top of what was becoming a nail biting match.

Bungay kept on piling on the pressure with Sarah Kett chasing up the pitch to force a well timed header into the back of the net before then pouncing on a loose ball to bring her goal tally in the match to two.

Never to be left off the score sheet captain Ellie Fewkes-Woodrow, she curled a sweetly struck shot into the top corner. Brooke Osborne, having hit practically every part of the goal finally hit the back of the net when she rifled the winning goal. The final score was 8-6 to Bungay High.

Great support was also provided by; Emily Walsh, Megan Vincent, Ella Taylor, Lucy Watson, Lauren Broadley and Jess Harvey who all played their part in what was a fantastic display of grit, determination and teamwork. Well done girls.

As we enter the half term break it is a good time to reflect on the success of the first half term and to look ahead at our plans for the future. We will be holding a commemoration service for Terry Hyde and Aaron Sayer at 4.00pm on All Souls Day, November 2nd 2011. We will dedicate a bench in Terry’s memory and plant a Hazel Tree for Aaron. All are welcome to attend, we would be grateful if you let us know in advance.

As usual The Rev. Ian Byrne, The Royal British Legion and I will conduct a Remembrance Assembly to the whole school on Friday 11th of November.

Over the past two weeks we have had a surge of activity that involves sport, Food Technology and community support.

It was great to see our sixth form design students working hard on the designs for the logo for the Bungay Festival next summer, I have been really impressed by the ideas and qulaity of the outcome. Also thanks to Emily Kiddy and Phoebe Thomas-Weeks for representing the school at an event held at St Mary’s Church in Halesworth, they both read sections from the King James Bible at event that celebrated the 400th anniversary of the bible.

Equally fantastic was the school final of the Future Chef competition last Thursday. The finalists were:

Charlotte Read who came first

Bertie Blandy who came second

Ellis Mathers and James Gander who came joint third.

Charlotte will go on to represent Bungay High School in the County Finals later in November, Bertie will represent the school in the Rotary Club Masterchef competition.

The judges Mark and Tom from the Castle Inn were overwhelmed by the standard, ‘it is beyond my wildest expectations’ said Mark. He proceeded to give the winners a special treat, a meal for all 4 of them at his restaurant.

Many thanks to Mrs Coles, Mrs Goring, Mrs Nainby and Mrs Richards for all their organisation and inspiration.

This terms inter form was a resounding success with both year groups. It has caused a real buzz in the year groups something we want to maintain throughout the year. Results are as follows:

Year 11

Girls Netball winners were – 11H

Runners up were 11U

Boys football winners were 11U

Runners up were 11S

Year 10

Girls Netball winners were 10N

Runners up were 10I

Boys Football winners were 10I

Runners up were 10B

At a recent Table Tennis Tournament Russell Mackay, Adam Roberts, Felix Prutton and Tommy Meadows made up the U-16 Table Tennis team. They journeyed to Esat Point academy to compete in the Northern Area qulaifying round. The team got off to a flying start achieving 4 out of 4 victories against Sir John Leman. Esat Point matched our skills and composure and the honours were shared 2 each. Our last game was against Benjamin Britten who were unbeaten, a place in the final was at stake for Bungay.

Felix and Russell faced tough opposition and narrowly lost out meaning the pressure was on Adam and Tommy, they had to win. However, very strong opposition meant Tommy lost out but Adam won his singles, which ensured Bungay second place overall.

The Sixth form took on Thorpe St Andrew Sports College in the National Cup. A hard fought match found the boys down 2-0 with 7 minutes to go, quick goals from Calvin Vincent and Cormac Warne took the game to extra time and Penalties. Charlie Holmes, Rob Read, Toby Kerslake and Dan Block all scored to take it to sudden death, where Calvin Vincent scored and James Shaw saved, meaning Bungay won 5-4 and go through to the next round for the first time in 6 years. The next game is against Thurston Comminity College at home.

The 6th form netball team continued there winning streak at a tournament hosted by Stradbroke School. There were 4 teams entered. The Bungay team were determined to win this tournamnet from the outset and no other school really stepped up to the challenge. Mrs Nabarro says that we played confident, fast paced netball which resulted in our girls winning everty match by large margins. Well done ladies.

The year 10 netball team also took part in an U-15 tournamnet. This was our first fixture of the season and we had a new team line up, the result of more players coming to training this year. The team were nervous at the start resulting in some tentative game play. But once we got a few goals, thanks to newly appointed Goal Attack Amy Lockwood, our confidence grew and we started taking control of games. This resulted in the team winning 4 out of 5 games.

Special mention should go to Brodie Lock, player of the match, for her outstanding effort in attack. Brodie made some excellent penetrating runs to create openings for Bungay, as well as passing some amazing balls in to the circle which allowed our shooters to be in the best position to score the goals.

Congratulations to everyone who played, I hope this will be the start to a very positive season.

The U-16 Ladies football team played Long Stratton, this was their second game of the season and after a narrow defeat in the first they were keen to get back on winning ways.

The first half saw pretty much an even contest. Rosie Cook put Bungay ahead after 15 minutes, Long Stratton would have been back on even terms if not for the flexibility of Bungay goalkeeper Ella Taylor.

In the second half Captain Ellen Fewkes Woodrow took commnad of the midfield, switching play with both wings. This allowed time and space for Joscelyn Foster and Sarh Kett to drive towards the box sending balls fizzing across the Long Stratton goal. The pressure soon became too much for Long Stratton as they conceded an own goal thanks to pressure applied by Chelsea Caplin. Soon after Rosie Cook doubled her goal tally as she linked up with Sarah Kett on the right wing.

Not to be outdone Sarha Kett put herself on the score sheet moments later with a superb self made goal running half the pitch fending off players challenges to blast the ball into the back of the net.

Bungay were now in full flow with nothing getting past the water tight defence governed by Lucy watson and Emily Walsh. Long Stratton struggled to deal with the quality crosses and concede another own goal to make the score 5-0.

With 5 minutes to go Ellen Fewkes-Woodrow added to the score, making it 6-0. Congratulations ladies.

It was great to see over 1000 visitors at our Open Evening, our chance to show parents and members of the community all that is good about the school.

Mrs McKenzie and I gave talks at both Middle schools after the open evening about the transition arrangements for 2012, it was a real pleasure to be so warmly received. Mrs McKenzie has produced a follow up letter with answers to the most frequently asked questions. We aim to have all the booklets, policies and letters relating to middle school parents on our website, then there is no need to ‘scrabble about’ in the bottom of PE bags!

Last week saw an exceptional Careers week. We had 25 visiting speakers. This is a really tough time to be making career choices but through the talks we hope the students are able to gain some inspiration and direction for their future studies and employment opportunities. The feedback from the visiting speakers was very positive about both our students and the atmosphere around the school, all visitors were keen to do repeat performances. Many thanks to Mrs Crowley for organising the events.

We continue to show parents around the school from out of catchment, they, like our visiting speakers are pleased with what they see and are keen to send thier children to Bungay High. Our current position is that 33% of our students are from out of catchment.

We continue to excel at sport, two recent football reports from Mr Middleton:

‘U14′s beat Denes High School 4-1. Goals from Matt Vettesse, Aaron Goffin, Sam Hills and an o.g. A good performance in a strong wind in that they were 2-0 at half time with the wind. Against the wind in the second half they were excellent and played some really good passing and counter attacking football. After conceding an early goal they began to dominate possession and Sam Hills scored an excellent individual goal, picking up the ball at half way, beating two players and then calmly slotting past the keeper’.

U15′s beat Thomas Mills High School 6-5. This game was an epic in which Bungay never found themselves behind but were pushed very hard by a spirited TMHS team.

A great start to the season for both teams.

We entered the National School Netball Championships last week. Our first match was against a very strong Framlingham College side. Court play was even between the two teams unforunately we lost 9-4. However the team still had a chance of getting to the semi finals if they won all their remaining games. With this goal in mind they set out to claim their place. It was hard work and we did not play some of our best netball, but we did scrape wins in all our matches. Thomas Mills were our next opponents, we drew up a new game plan and went out to become finalists. We played our best netball in this match. Well done to everyone who played and congratulations on believing in yourselves and not giving up.

We also entered the Suffolk Schools Golf competition. We had three representatives playing at Felixstowe Golf Club. The team found it hard in difficult conditions but all put in good performances. Well played to Charlie Holmes, Rob Read and Michael Manser.

Congratulations to Holly Abell in Year 11, you may recall Holly is our top Hunter trials rider. This weekend she rode in the Beccles and Bungay Riding Club competition at Geldeston.

Holly was up against 25 other riders, the course was very demanding, and with a lovely clear round she came 3rd overall and FIRST Beccles and Bungay member.

Well done to both Holly and her wonderful horse.

We look forward to seeing parents again this week at the Pathways evening where you will see the launch of the new online 6th Form prospectus. The 6th Form team, Mr Attenburrow and the design team at Mustard have done a fantastic job.

The first three weeks back at school have been very busy, as you would expect. We have 988 students on roll this year and they have got off to a really promising and positive start. This has been witnessed by the many visitors we have had to the school over the past couple of weeks, parents and prospective students looking to see if they want to be part of the team here at Bungay High.

We are looking forward to welcoming over 800 vistors to the Open Evening on Monday 3rd October, it will be a tight fit but hopefully enjoyable experience.

Mrs MacKenzie and I will be doing presentations to the parents at Bungay Middle school on Tuesday evening and Halesworth Middle School on Wedenesday evening, the aim is to share with them our vision for 2012 and beyond.

One of the most important features of the school is the student voice. It was great to see how well the students responded to School Council Elections last Thursday. Many thanks to our Returning Officer, Mr Barker for the organisation of the event. Congratulations to the following on their election to School Council:

Charlie Blandy

Jake Stacey

Callum Rolfe

Bertie Gerrish

Chip Skingley

Jasmine Hood

Felix Prutton

Rosie Garland

They will have a demanding time this year as they will be working very closely with us on the transitional changes in readiness for September 2012.

We have a number of very exciting events coming up, this week sees the Year 10 Enterprise Day, where groups led by business people will be planning a School Prom. Many thanks to Mr Leech for all the planning that has gone into organising the event.

Thanks also to Mrs Crowley for the planning for Careers Week coming up on 10th October, and to the 25 organisations that will be giving up their time to inspire our students.

Can we remind all families that with Autumn and dark nights upon us, students need to be aware of staying safe on the roads in the early morning and late evening. It is vitally important that all students who cycle to school or to a bus stop have good cycle lights and wear reflective clothing. Similarly, students who walk along roads without pavements to their bus stop need reflective clothing to ensure that they can be seen clearly by passing traffic.

We have established a number of links with overseas schools. Mrs Roffey has created a link with a school in Rwanda, a number of her students are in email communication with their Rwandan counterparts.

We also have a link with a school in the Czech Republic, the quality of the letters to our students is amazing, we are hoping for our first exchange visit to our Czech friends this year.

I am really proud to report the success of our Countryside Studies group from year 11 who assisted the Broads authority at Carlton Marshes on Friday to launch the new Suffolk and Norfolk Broads plan 2011. Our boys were chosen as perfect examples of interested and enthusiastic students of Countryside Conservation Skills. The Chairman said ‘They are a credit to Bungay High School – without a doubt’.

Many thanks to:

Jonathan Ball

Lewis Rudd

Tommy Meadows

Daniel Thompson

Alex Wakely

We have already seen a host of sporting matches taking place and are delighted with the participation of large numbers of students.

A mixed bag of results so far, with wins in the Under 15 Rugby and U-18 football in the National cup against Notre Dame, and losses for the U-14 Rugby and U-15 football. The U-16 girls football match against SJLHS was a cracking game with our girls narrowly losing 2-1, the team were very well led by Ellie Fewkes-Woodrow and Brooke Osborne scored with a stunning 30 yard chip over the goalkeeper.

This week we host the area qualifier for the national school netball competition. We have the Year 9 on Tuesday and Year 11 on Thursday. Best of luck to them all.

As we prepare for the return to school this week it is time to reflect on the exam results of the summer. I spoke of A level last week, this week I speak in praise of the year 11 GCSE scores. The year group did exceptionally well, achieving 82% overall and 65% 5+GCSE A*-C grades including English and Maths, they scored the best ever average point score per student, which is a great result.

Special note of the diploma students in SHAD and Engineering who achieved excellent results, thanks to the vocational teams who taught them both at school and at NSSC. We have now set another aspirational target for next year, which will be to achieve 70% again.

This year will be very demanding on a number of fronts. We have the planning for the arrival of years 7 and 8 in place, many thanks to Mr Bewick and Mr Wickson and their talented teams in assisting and in some cases driving this forward, and the move next year to the middle school for our sixth form, again many thanks to Mr Bewick for letting us on the site this summer to get some preparatory work done.

Many thanks to Mrs Eldrett, our Director of Finance for the way she has led the transition to becoming an academy, as I said before, the vast majority of people will notice no difference other than the additional resources that will now be at our disposal.

We welcome Mrs McKenzie as Assistant Headteacher to replace Mr Allen, her main focus this year is to plan and implement the vertical tutoring programme that will be put in place in September 2012, there will be lots of opportunities to find out more about this throughout the year.

It is great to hear of the achievements of past students, today I heard that Alexander Charlish has been awarded his PhD from University College London, it is in Electrical Engineering. Dr Charlish is now working in Germany. Well done to Alexander and his very proud parents.

Today is A level results day.

It has been another excellent year for Bungay High School. A level results were very pleasing with 105 students achieving the results that were right on target with an average 210 points per entry. The pass rate of 97% is up on last year and is testament to the commitment shown by both students and staff. There were notable individual successes and we are delighted that Head Girl Rachel Harding has got into Oxford University to read Biochemistry and Jenny Honeywood into Cambridge to read History. Particular congratulations to Oscar Hawes who achieved four A* grades and is going to York University. Other notable individual results are Margaret Hollamby – 2A* and 2 A’s, Jack Elvin-Poole – 2A* and 1 A, Jodie Runacres 2A* and 1A, Jenny Honeywood 1A* and 3 A’s, Ken Tang 1A* and 3A’s, Alice Carruthers 1A* and 2A’s, Rachel Harding 1A* and 2 A’s, Robert Kirby 4A’s and 1 B and Jhislaine Dodd 3 A’s.

Congratulations to all our students.

We have had an update on year 10 student Holly Abell and her horse The Brumby at the Trailblazers showjumping event held at the end of July.

Both Holly and The Brumby did brilliantly to be in the final 18 for the jump off, they eventuality came 9th which is an outstanding result because of the clear rounds that they achieved throughout the competition.

I am also delighted to welcome back the sixth form groups who had beeen to Egypt and Edindburgh, both groups had experienced wonderful opportunities, many thanks to the staff and parents who gave up holiday time to take them.

Many thanks to Mrs Barnard and the staff team who organised the Gold Award Tea Party on Monday, it was a really great event, where families and Students could celebrate together.

This afternoon saw a similar event held in the Sports Hall and organised by Mrs Nabarro and our excellent PE team and sixth form students. The Sports presentation afternoon has grown in strength year on year, this year saw the largest turn out of students and parents since we started the event.

Many thanks to Avril Swords the International Gymnast for her inspirational speech.

News is coming in of graduation successes, here is the latest list:

Becky Nainby – 2:1 from Royal Holloway

Congratulations to them all.

It was tremendous the receive a report from the Gold Award assessor in Perthshire Scotland this week.

Rob McDermott emailed me a glowing report on the attitude and behaviour of our Gold Award students who undertook a very demanding and challenging 5 day gruelling expedition in very challenging conditions, he described their attitude as exemplary.

My thanks to Miss Dix and Mrs Mckenzie for giving the students the opportunity to experience such events.

Mr Allen also reported on the mature and committed way the Silver Award groups conducted themselves in the Lake District the week before and Mr Attenburrow had a great time with the Outdoor Education groups in Snowdonia, only returning last Friday.

I would like to pass on my thanks to Mrs Barnard for the way she had organised the two weeks work experience for year 10 students, the vast majority of whom had an excellent experience. The government is withdrawing the funding for such placements in the future, so this will be our last whole year group work experience, in future it will be undertaken by students on vocational and applied courses.

This is the last week before we break for the summer.

Our Academy conversion will be completed by the end of the week, many thanks to Mrs Eldrett and Mrs Ramsey for the great work they have done on the financial, HR and site elements.

Mr Hughes leaves the school this week after 36 loyal and committed years of service to the school, he is truly a legend in the eyes of his students past and present. Also leaving is Mr Tall who is looking to teach abroad and Mr Allen who is leaving as assistant head but staying in a part time role leading Business Studies for a further year.

It has been a very emotional last three weeks in school.

Firstly, I have to announce the sudden and unexpected death of our evening caretaker and Invigilator Terry Hyde. His Funeral is in Luton this Tuesday. Our thoughts are with his wife Gillian and his children, one of whom attends our school.

Secondly, I have to announce the sudden death of one of our year 11 boys, Aaron Sayer, who died at home on Wednesday 29th June. Aaron was a smashing lad who will be sorely missed by all who knew him in school. Our thoughts and prayers are with his Family, we have been told that his friends and teachers will be able to attend Aaron’s funeral at St Mary’s Flixton, we are still awaiting confirmation of the date. We had a letter this week from Mum and Dad thanking all his friends and the school for the tributes to Aaron and the support given.

The year 11 Prom went ahead on the first of July, as both a tribute to Aaron and a celebration of all that has been great about his year group. Many thanks to Mr Middleton, Mrs Athanasouli and colleagues who made it such a special and moving occasion.

We will be creating two remembrance books in the school for Terry and Aaron over this next week. Many thanks to the Rev. Ian Byrne and Rosedale Funeral Services for their support and generosity.

We also had a visit from OFSTED for two days during this period. Their was an HMI and 4 additional inspectors, they scrutinised the school closely for two days and agreed at the end that Bungay High is an Outstanding School. We are delighted with this outcome which is a reward for the hard work our staff, students, parents and governors put in together to make Bungay High a great place to work and study.

I have visited all but one of the primary schools in the area to talk about the future 2012 and beyond, I have been made very welcome at them all. We will be providing all children and parents with more detail about the vertical tutoring and curriculum in the autumn term. We will be appointing a new assistant head in the last week of term, so that they can get to work on this over the summer and in the autumn term.

Nothing makes a headteacher more proud than watching his students who have faced adversity rise from their distress and return to learning. My admiration is beyond description for the three students who are overcoming major spinal surgery and to a year 9 girl who has fought a brain tumour. They really help you get life into perspective.

Many congratulations to the many students who have excelled in their field of expertise over the past three weeks. Examples include the following:

Katrina Nash- Truman, who has excelled in her Drama work at the Cut in Halesworth, she completed her Silver Arts Award on 6th July with Trinity Guildhall, London. Well done Katrina.

Congratulations to Holly Abell of 10H, she has qualified her pony for the prestigious show jumping championships at Stoneleigh Park in Warwickshire at the end of July. We wish Holly the best of luck. The action photos we have of Holly in the qualifiers are fantastic.

Congratulations to George Catchpole of year 9 who is in the national squad, took part in the R.S. Tera championships at Hayling last week. George was one of 64 entries in the sports class and the top places were hotly contested. George tells me the local boy won the event and that the weekend had been a great success, he is now looking forward to the world championships in three weeks time, which are going to be held in Denmark, training hard and very excited. Best of luck at the world championships George.

Many thanks to the Sixth Form Scientists who helped out at a family Science day held at Great Yarmouth last weekend, organised by Shell Education Services. Those involved were: Lily Capps-Jenner, Ella Charter, Sam Hubbard, Lily Crowley, Jonny Coles, Lily Booth, Beth Gooda, Hugo Harvey, Joss Ward, Shannon Hallinan, Aimee Allerton, Zoe Cole, Florrie Thomas, Louise Ellis, Pip Wagg, Robert Kirby, Teresa Rush.

Congratulations to the Sixth form Society, Health and Development Group who have been raising money for the East Coast Child Charity. Leanne Mills who is their spokesperson has kept me fully briefed on the cake sale and car washing duties, well done to all the group.

Congratulations to former students Tom Phillipson and Matt Woolner, who for the second year running have come top in their respective Catering groups at Norwich City College Catering school.

Congratulations to Chris Bennett who has achieved a First Class Honours Degree in Economics from the University of Sheffield and got a much sought after job with Price, Waterhouse & Coopers. Well done Chris.

Thank you to the parents, staff and students who made last Wednesday evenings Intake event go so well, there was a great atmosphere in school which bodes incredibly well for the next five years of working in partnership.

We wish the best of luck to our Mathematicians, who are in London tomorrow, 20th June 2011, taking part in the International Maths Challenge Competition. They won the regional events, if they win this national event they go to Singapore for the World finals. The students taking part are Liam Saunders and Matthew Skazick from year 9 at BHS and brother and sister team Felix and Bea Prutton from year 8 at Bungay Middle School.

Tomorrow morning sees the visit of a Shakespeare Company to year 9, they will be performing ‘The Taming of the Shrew’, which year 9 students are studying in class at present.

All parents are welcome to attend the Friends of Bungay High School meeting this coming Thursday, 23rd June. I have been asked to give an update on our Academy status at that meeting. The meeting starts at 6.00pm.

I am very grateful to Mr Allen and Mrs Hubbard for agreeing to take our Able Gifted and Talented Year 10 students to Oxford University this coming Thursday, we know they will have a fantastic experience.

You may know that Mr Allen and Mr Hughes are retiring at the end of this term, if you wish to make a contribution to their leaving gift you can do so via the school office.

You will be aware of talk about strike action affecting schools and other public services, we will issue information this week showing the impact it will have at Bungay High School on Thursday 30th June. The Gold Award Trip to the Norfolk Show for all our 100 Prize winners will go ahead, as will the Peer Mentor training, we will bring the Sixth Form into school but may have difficulty fully staffing a full Year 9 and 10 curriculum.

This week, 8th June 2011, we heard from the Secretary of State and Lord Hill that our bid to become an Academy has been accepted, ready to start on August 1st 2011. Many thanks to Lynn Eldrett our School Business Manager for all the hard work with the DFE, Eversheds our solicitors and the County Finance/HR team. We are very lucky to have such a talented person working with us.

We are busy preparing for our OFSTED inspection at present, unfortunately the inspectors will not see the whole school in action but will see Year 9,10 and 12 in full swing.

We look forward to meeting the new year 9 parents at the Intake evening on Wednesday night of this week, we have nearly 240 students in that year group.

It was a pleasure to be welcomed at Holton Primary School last Thursday evening to meet Jean Righton the head and the 20+ parents who have children that will transfer to the High school over the next two to three years. I was able to hear about the exciting vision for Holton from Mrs Righton and was able to share with the parents the vision for the High School.

Back in school we had a fantastic Year 10 sports Day last week, brilliantly organised by Mrs Nabarro and the PE team. The participation rates and commitment from the students was exceptional creating a wonderful atmosphere on the day. So good that they persuaded me to run in the 800 metres for Miss White’s tutor group alongside Mr Webster and Mr Lewis, it very nearly killed me!

Congratulations to the two school record breakers, Kieran McMorran broke the 800metre record and Jack Strachan the 400 metre record. We now await the announcement of the Victor and Vitrix Ludorum awards which have been keenly fought for this year.

It was a delight to award certificates to the year 10 students who have excelled at the NSSC this year, the comments by their lecturers make us very proud of them.

It was great to get the news of one of our Sixth Formers this week, Andi-Louise Horne has been accepted at The Laine School of Dance in Epsom Surrey, the top Dance School attracting all the best dancers in the UK. Andi has also been working with the Royal Ballet and local dance groups, we know she will be a success and look forward to going to see her star in The West End in the near future.

I am very grateful to all the staff who gave up their half term to work with the DofE Silver Expedition group in Wales, I am pleased to say they all passed and were a credit to the school, their parents and to themselves.

We are making very good progress on the plans for the Sixth Form Biology trip to Egypt this summer, thanks to Mr Considine for leading this and for the DofE Gold Expedition to Nicaragua next year under the leadership of Miss Dix. Thanks to Miss Doughty and Mr Gunning for the extra rehearsal time they are putting in for the A level Drama groups tour of The Edinburgh Festival this year, what an amazing opportunity.

The GCSE and A level artists are taking over hall 1 over the next couple of weeks to showcase their work from the last two years, it will be great, please pop in to school to view the exhibition which will run for the next two weeks.

I think all the above shows that we live up to our Motto of Opportunity and Excellence.

The governing body of Bungay High formally approved the proposal to become an Academy from August 1st 2011 at their meeting on the 9th May.

This is a momentous decision for us all, I am convinced that it is the right decision and will enable us to keep the top quality teaching and support staff at the school.

We also had news that we will be part of the pilot programme for new Ofsted inspections. They have selected Bungay High to work with them this term. Normally schools get a couple of days notice, I will attend a briefing meeting in Nottingham on Friday 13th May to find out the ‘rules of engagement’ then return to school to plan for the visit which will probably take place in the next two or three weeks.

I believe this is another feather in our cap and I know the inspectors will be impressed with and by our students, staff and governors.

I was delighted by the response of the students to the Rotary Club Teenage Cancer Appeal, they helped raise £478 in one day. Many thanks to Chris Staines from Rotary and Mrs Wiltshire my associate head for the organisation.

I would also like to praise Hannah Alred one of our year 11 students who has led a campaign to get the county council to change their minds over the Explore card, working with other schools she raised over 400 signatures to present to SCC cabinet, we are awaiting the outcome. This is citizenship in action!

We have had Art exams at GCSE and A level over the past week, the quality of work is stunning. You will be able to see for yourselves at the Exhibition in hall 1 after 24th June.

The work on the Halesworth Campus is gaining momentum, many thanks to the tireless work of Simon Weeks, Erik Wilcock, Richard Woolnough, Annette Dunning, Annette Abbott and Tony Goldson. keep your eyes on the local press for updates.

As all parents and governors know we are consulting at present on whether the school should become an academy, if you have any views either for or against I would be interested in hearing them, you can get in touch by emailing academy@bungayhigh.co.uk.

This week saw the last our our School Improvement Partner visits, Laurie Robinson has done an excellent job working with us for the last three years being very supportive of our achievements and asking the serious questions of why do we do things the way we do so that he can fully understand the culture and ethos of the school. We will now be working in A Raising Achievement Network (RAN) with other successful Suffolk High Schools.

This week has seen a stunning result in the UK Maths Challenge event held at Framlingham College. This was an event for years 8 and 9, there were 25 schools involved and Bungay High/Bungay Middle partnership won the event, many congratulations to Felix and Bea from BMS and Matthew and Luke from BHS. A tremendous result and good luck in the finals in London. Many thanks to Miss Marriott for working with them.

The u-15 Rugby Squad won the Area Rugby tournament with fine wins over Thomas Mills High School 32-5 and Hartismre High 24-5.

The U-16 girls Hockey team won their tournament in Lowestoft with a fine win in the final against KHS.

Many thanks to Miss Dix and Mrs Mackenzie for giving up their Sunday last week to work with the Silver Duke of Edinburgh’s Award team preparing for their summer expeditions to Scotland.

It was a pleasure to Welcome back ex student Matthew Ball to the school on Friday. Matthew is currently a third of the way through his officer training at Sandhurst, he will graduate in the summer and will join either REME or the Royal Engineers. He left us to go to Welbeck College and onto University, where he graduated last summer with a degree in Civil Engineering.

It was also a pleasure to receive feedback from Waveney District Council about the contribution two of our students, George Crickmore and Alice Carruthers made to the Holocaust Memorial Day, commerations 2011. Jo McCullum, the Community Development Officer said, ” Their contribution was very much appreciated and in particular because they did this at such short notice. They presented in a professional and meaningful manner”. George and Alice will be accompanying Peter Aldous our MP to Auschwitz in the near future.

I have also had an update from Toyota PLC, and their Dream Car Team, to say that Kalun Bedingfield has been selected as one of the 5 top prize winners in his age group in this national event. He will be going to Epsom in Surrey to receive his reward in half term. Many congratulations to Kalun and the other students who entered and to Mr Gillett for providing the inspiration.

We have concluded our first exchange with a school in Valencia, Spain. All our students returned this week and by all accounts had a tremendous time, Many thanks to Mr Tall and Mrs Barnard for making it such a successful event, I know it has been appreciated by the parents.

Our very talented students have had a number of opportunities to showcase their skills over the past couple of weeks.

It was great to have four teams in the Rotary sponsored Public Speaking Competition held at the school, the debates included: ‘Should Latin still be taught in state schools’, the students thought that it should. The Myth and Reality of Time Travel, led by Jhislaine Dodd, Alice Carruthers and Thomas Chapman, a very interesting debate which went on to actually win the event and go through to the next round in Hertfordshire. The other titles were, ‘Does Facial hair have a place in modern day society’ and ‘Should Private Schools offer more subsidised places for working class children’. My thanks to the Rotarians and to Angela Brook the deputy Mayor on agreeing to be on the judging panel.

We had a visit from Robin Eastaugh the local Honary organiser of the Poppy Appeal, he was absolutely delighted with the fund raising efforts of all our students, some of whom donated even after selling out of poppies. We made a good contribution to the local total of over £6,000.

Last week we had the results of a competition entered by Mr Gillett and the design students. Four were entered in the Toyota Dream Car Competition and all four of them have been successful in getting through to the national level. Jodie Smith in year 9 has won the 13-15 year old artwork element for the region winning herslf £50 of Art equipment from Jarrolds. This really is a superb achievement.

It was great to get a letter from Nigel Wooltorton this week, he is the Team Manager of Harleston Magpies Hockey team. The team reached the national finals in Wolverhampton and contained three of our students, I quote ” Fiona Mackenzie, Jess Howland and Keira Booty all contributed to a fine team performance. Their conduct and behaviour along with the whole squad were a credit to themselves and the school”.

Whilst on the sporting theme, the U14 Rugby squad won the Northern Area Rugby festival held at Southwold Rugby Club last week, they ran out tremendous winners only conceding one try in the whole tournament.

This week has seen over 100 students sitting the Intermediate Maths Challenge, this is a national competition that pits the wits of our maths students against the rest of the UK. We look forward to the results soon.

The Year 13 Drama improvised presentations were this week, there were very powerful performances from each and every one of them.

We have just heard that our Head Girl Rachel Harding, has been selected for the UBS Award for Outstanding Students, this prestigious award celebrates the achievements of academically gifted and hardworking students from state schools who have excelled in their GCSE’s and AS level exams. Rachel has also been accepted at Oxford University to read Bio Chemistry from September 2011.

We are in the process of producing materials for all our Year 4-8 pupils in the primary and middle schools to show them what life will be like at the high school from 2012. These will be ready to go to parents after Easter 2011.

These are difficult times in schools at the moment, the new government has introduced a number of new measures about running schools and what should be taught in them. The Local Authority are having to make cuts and these are impacting on schools. We are now being offered opportunities to move away from the Local Authority and run ourselves as an Academy with funding directly from the DFE. However, there are still too many answers to find before any changes to life at Bungay High other than School organisational review can be broadcast. Interestingly in now looks like the LA will be looking to the Academies and Free Schools programme to fund the SOR in the Western Area of Suffolk from 2017, whilst the rest of us have to made do on a shoestring for 2012.

The staff and governors will be debating this contentious situation this week.

Message from the Headteacher

I would like to welcome all of our students back to school and extend an especial welcome to those who are joining us for the first time. I hope that after the summer break all students are looking forward to an exciting and enjoyable year. We are committed to helping each student achieve their full potential and we look forward to your support in this aim.

We have a very busy year ahead in preparation for the school changes in September 2012 and we will keep you informed of progress. We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at school evenings and events throughout the year.

Congratulations go to students and staff on the exam results this summer: Year 11 did exceptionally well, achieving 82% overall and 65% 5+GCSE A*-C grades including English and Maths, they scored the best ever average point score per student, which is a great result. Special note must be made of the diploma students in SHaD and Engineering who achieved excellent results, thanks to the vocational teams who taught them both at school and at the North Suffolk Skills Centre.

‘A’ level results were very pleasing with 105 students achieving the results that were right on target with an average 210 points per entry. The pass rate of 97% is up on last year and is testament to the commitment shown by both students and staff.

The extra-curricular trips to the Edinburgh Festival and to Egypt, which took place over the summer holidays, were a great success and enjoyed by all participants.

Holidays in Term Time

There is no automatic right for students to be absent for family holidays. The school is being pressurised by the Local Authority and the Department for Education not to authorise holidays unless in exceptional circumstances. Each yellow form requesting leave of absence must be accompanied by a letter explaining the exceptional circumstances, otherwise the holiday will not be authorised.
